چکیده

2014 We derive some exact results for the statics of solitary defects (« hairpins ») in the conformations of nematic main chain worm-like polymer liquid crystals in which there is both a bending and a nematic contribution to the potential energy. It is shown that for a polymer of finite length in mechanical equilibrium there can exist only a finite number of hairpins and that these are all unstable configurations. These results (which are also applicable to combs) are then used to prove that the destruction of a long single hairpin proceeds via the hairpin reptating along its own length even in the absence of entanglements. The two separate cases of a continuous worm, and a worm consisting of N links are studied. The implications for the frequency dependent dielectric response are discussed. J. Phys. Nematic polymers: hairpins, ringlets and excimer fluorescence

Short liquid crystalline polymers in a nematic environment are very unlikely to cyclise. Hairpins, abrupt chain folds, favour cyclisation. As a result the cyclisation rate constant exhibits a maximum as a function of chain length. The maximum corresponds to a new object, a "ringlet". The rate constant also depends exponentially on temperature. This suggests excimer fluorescence as a probe of co...

Correlation functions of main-chain polymer nematics constrained by tensorial and vectorial conservation laws.

We present and analyze correlation functions of a main-chain polymer nematic in a continuum worm-like chain description for two types of constraints formalized by the tensorial and vectorial conservation laws, both originating in the microscopic chain integrity, i.e., the connectivity of the polymer chains. In particular, our aim is to identify the features of the correlation functions that are...

Tube Model for the Elasticity of Entangled Nematic Rubbers

Dense rubbery networks are highly entangled polymer systems, with significant topological restrictions for the mobility of neighbouring chains and crosslinks preventing the reptation constraint release. In a mean field approach, entanglements are treated within the famous reptation approach, since they effectively confine each individual chain in a tube-like geometry. We apply the classical ide...

Long - range Casimir interactions between impurities in ne - matic liquid crystals and the collapse of polymer chains in such solvents

Long-range Casimir interactions between impurities in ne-matic liquid crystals and the collapse of polymer chains in such solvents Abstract. – The elastic interactions between objects embedded in a nematic liquid crystal are usually caused by the average distorsion—rather than by the fluctuations—of the nematic ori-entational field. We argue that for sufficiently small particles, the nematic-me...

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...
